Developing Independence

In school children have to become increasingly independent and confident enough to do things for themselves.

Ideas to develop independence

Train your child to dress and undress him/herself. Having shoes with Velcro and clothes with zips or easy buttons can save frustration if your child has not mastered laces, buckles or small fastenings.

Your child should be able to use the toilet unaided and wash hands afterwards.

Eating a school snack or meal should be completed with minimal adult help.

Children should be able to take care of personal belongings so give them simple tasks such as putting toys away.

Encourage your child to finish a task once they have started. Let them complete an activity on their own.

At school children need to hold their attention and concentrate for short periods of time, staying in a given place. At home give your child a fun activity that lasts for three or four minutes, then gradually extend this to ten minutes.
